It holds a higher refractive index than sapphire or ruby too, contributing to its intense sparkle, though it's softer, so best suited to pendants or earrings. Using Sphene in Jewellery & Care Tips | Mohs Scale 5–5.5: Sphene has incredible fire and sparkle, making it a knockout gem, but it’s also soft and needs extra care. We think it deserves to be set in a ring where its brilliance can be seen, but only as an occasion piece rather than for daily wear. Clean gently with warm soapy water and a soft brush, never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners as Sphene is too fragile.

👀 Did you know? Because of its strong double refraction, when you look closely at a well-cut Sphene, you can actually see doubled back facets inside the stone, a unique optical effect.
